Espacio de Junio 2014: Casa de la Calle Real

There are no translations available.

Piece March 2014: Alizar Tilework from the Queen´s Dressing-Room

Pieza_marzo_2014The Spanish term alizar, which derives from the Andalusian Arabic word issal meaning "low" or "bottom part", is normally used to refer to a tile or panel of tiles decorating the lower part of a wall. The specific use of the word alizar discussed here implied that the tile was connected to other similar tiles forming a frieze decoration on the edge at the corner of the sill on low windows. It comes from the room in the tower-balcony of Abu i-Yuyus Nasr, also known as Abu l-Hayyay, and more generally as the Queen’s Dressing-Room.

In order to fit perfectly into the edge of the sill, it was made with a mould with an angled or L-shaped profile. This is why it has a broad horizontal base on the back which was not normally visible and helped embed the piece into the wall. On the outside it has a vertical face which thickens towards the top. This surface, which was visible, was glazed and decorated.

Espacio Marzo 2014: El mirador romántico

Espacio_abril_2011 Name: Romantic Viewpoint

Period: The Romantic Viewpoint was built in 1836 by the administrator of the property of the Generalife, Mr Jaime Traverso, who was the administrator of the possessions of the Marquises of Campotejar.

Outstanding features: The architecture and the arrangement of the viewpoint present a contrast with the Nasrid architecture based in the palace of the Generalife. This contrast is more obvious when comparing with the Lindaraja Viewpoint located in the Court of the Lions. On the other hand this Romantic viewpoint doesn’t present such a hard contrast where it’s located since it’s surrounded by romantic gardens and not by the typical vegetable gardens of the Nasrid period.

The Nasrid column from the Alcaicería

columna The Alcaicería, one of the most important parts of the Nasrid Medina, was originally a silk market and continued to act as such until well into the 19th century, when the silk merchants were joined by other traders and craftsmen who are still remembered today in the names of streets; sederos (silk merchants), pañeros (drapers), curtidores (tanners), zapateros (shoemakers)…

The 19th century Alcaicería had little to do with the markets described by Lalaig or Andrea Navagero three centuries earlier. However its general layout must have been much the same as in Moorish times. It was confined within the same perimeter, which had various doors or gates for access, and its outer walls were made up of houses and shops mounted one on top of another. Its official title of Royal Site and Fort of the Alcaicería proclaims its links with the Crown, which received revenues from the businesses conducted there and which meant it was administered by the Governor of the Royal Alhambra.

On 20th July 1843 the Alcaicería suffered a devastating fire which destroyed most of the shops inside its walls. This disaster proved to be a watershed in the life of the market which was never the same again, in spite of the efforts made to rebuild the perimeter walls and the shops. Those responsible for the rebuilding opted for a markedly neo-Nasrid aesthetic, the first example of imitation Alhambra-style architecture in the city of Granada.

Room of the Beds in the Bath os Comares

Espacio_diciembre_2011The hamman or Comares Bath is one of the most significant spaces of the Alhambra, for being the only medieval Islamic Bath that has remained practically integrate around Occident. The rest room, named bayt al-maslaj or Room of the Beds, is one of the most important spaces of the bath and owes its name to the two spacious rooms, lightly high, that flank the main room. Most of the decorative elements of the room: the fountain, pavements, columns and plaster works are original, although the ceilings and plaster works were repaired and repainted with highly colours in the second half of the 19th Century.
