Parchment and paper in the Hispano-Muslim world, Piece of the Month in the Museum of the Alhambra

The Council of the Alhambra and Generalife presents Parchment and paper in the Hispano-Muslim world as the Piece of the Month for May in the Museum of the Alhambra. Every Saturday from 12:00h in Room I, all those interested in finding out more about this piece can come and hear the explanations given by the restorers Rafael Lorente Fernández and Rubén Sánchez Romero. This activity is free.

Although for various reasons it is difficult to find examples from this period, in the permanent collection of the Museum of the Alhambra there are two magnificent editions of the Koran dating from the 13th and 15th centuries approximately. The objective of this talk is firstly to offer a brief introduction to the types, production techniques and materials commonly used in making these books (papyrus, leather, parchment and paper), and they will also be focusing on the original material for such volumes, parchment, widely used from the third and fourth centuries onwards until the Muslims introduced paper into Europe at the end of the eighth century. 

They will also be explaining the most frequent problems they encounter in the conservation of works of this kind, and will be analysing the techniques used to restore them.
