Piece of June 2012. The Fish Safa

zafa June’s piece of the month at the Museum of the Alhambra is the fish safa (straight-sided bowl). Every Saturday in June, from noon onwards, art historian Elena Gómez will analyse the piece in Room VII of the museum, as part of a free programme offered by Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife.

The fish safa is a direct graphic introduction to the domestic ceramics used as tableware in the Nasrid period. The interior of the wheel-thrown safa has curved glazed walls, topped off with a concave-convex rim.

The visual poetry of the safa comes from the decoration on its interior with figurative elements in black painted over a green glaze. To date, the motifs have been interpreted as representing fish.

Space June 2012. The "Torre de la Pólvora"

It is situated in the north-east an in a slighty advanced position relative to the wall which makes it an strategic point for the control of the attackers whose access was though the watercourse situated in the foothills, now known actually as Cuesta Gomérez.

Espacio_mayo2011 La Alhambra se encuentra elevada sobre la colina de la Sabika. Esta situación implica el control del espacio tanto física como simbólicamente, consiguiéndose el dominio de un territorio a la vez que su defensa. Su ubicación la hace independiente e inexpugnable, especialmente a partir de un punto estratégico como es la Alcazaba, el espacio más antiguo de todo el Recinto Monumental.

El Camino de Ronda, que recorre todo el perímetro junto a la muralla, no cumplía únicamente una función militar sino que delimitaba las funciones urbanas al ser la calle que, una vez atravesada la Puerta de las Armas, llegaba al interior del recinto de la Alhambra.

Space May 2013: Paparated Walk of the Alcazaba

Space may 2013The Alhambra is built on top of the hill of the Sabika. This location gives the monument a dual control: physical and symbolic, achieving a complete control over the territory and the defence of the area simultaneously. Its position makes of the Alhambra an independent and impregnable ensemble, especially from the strategic point of view. This feature starts already with the Alcazaba, which is the oldest part of the Monumental Complex.

Apart from having a military function, the Parapet Walk was also delimitating the urban structure of the citadel, once it went through the Puerta de las Armas (Gate of the Arms) it reached the interior of the Alhambra complex.

Pieza Mayo 2012: Lápida fundacional del Maristán de Granada

lapidaEl Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife presenta como pieza del mes la lápida fundacional del Maristán de Granada. Los interesados en participar en este programa gratuito, que tiene lugar los sábados de mayo, a partir de las 12:00h, pueden presentarse en la Sala IV del Museo de la Alhambra, donde la licenciada en Estudios Semíticos (Árabe), Mariana Kalaitzidou, desvelará las peculiaridades de esta singular pieza.

El Maristán de Granada lo fundó el sultán nazarí Muhammad V (1354-1359 y 1362-1391), en el transcurso de su segundo reinado. Su lápida fundacional se trata de una pieza de extraordinaria belleza que, además, aporta datos importantes sobre el edificio y su benefactor, tales como la fecha exacta del comienzo y finalización de la obra (1365-1367), los destinatarios, la genealogía del sultán, etc.
