Space November 2012: The houses of the Partal

casa_partal The Partal is the area that stretches from the court of the Lindaraja which has been taken over by gardens and terraces that surrounding and old parcially preserved palace. The gardens were designed during the first third of the XX century, integrating arqueological and arquitectonical remainings. Due to the decorative typology it is believed that it was built by Muhammad III times (1302-1309). It was probably the first nasrid's palace seatlement.

Next to the portico of the palace, four independent Moorish houses are found, although some researchers have pointed out the possibility of only being three. All of them have two floors but not courtyard.

Inside one of the houses some remainings of the external paintings of the portico have been preserved, as well as a mural decorations with scenes of the Nasrid Court. These paintings, made in stucco, are divided in 3 horizontal sections where different scenes can be observed: in the botton frieze hut scenes are represented; the middle one represents the return to the campsite with the plunder; and the upper frieze is decorated with festivity scenes.

Piece November 2012. The ceiling of the niche at Comares Hall

techo The Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife announces the Piece of the Month, the ceiling of the niche at the entrance to the Comares Hall. Those who are interested in participating in this free programme, that will take place from 12 a.m. on the second, third and fourth Saturday of November, may go to Hall V of the Museum of the Alhambra. There María del Carmen López Pertíñez, doctor of Art History, will explain the details of this unique piece.

The ceiling of one of the niches in the archway giving access to the Comares Hall has been kept in the Museum of the Alhambra ever since this was established. This piece, together with its partner, conserved in situ, can be considered as the only known examples of this style of architectural decoration.

Although it is just a board with a carved geometric pattern, it is still interesting both because of its exclusive typology and because of the specific technique with which the geometrical strokes are outlined, playing with the woods of different colours and textures as though it were marquetry.

The exhibition of the characteristics of this piece allows us to insist on its context. This is a review of the internal cladding presented by the niches in the Alhambra, the variation in materials used, and the treatment of them and of the remains that exist at present. So it will be possible to deduce the aspects of some of the lost pieces.

The niches, together with the spaces for cupboards, are blind openings in the walls, particularly associated with constructions from the Nasrid period.

The niches that were designed and carried out on the width of the jambs of the doors or openings giving access to the main rooms of the houses were particularly profuse in the Alhambra. This was due to the obvious magnificence of the palaces.

As well as being an element with its own decoration that is integrated into the panels covering the jambs, because of their projection into the inside, they provide specific data regarding the interpretation of archaeological or architectural remains of this type of structure.

When: Second, third and fourth Saturday of the month, noon
Where: Room V, Museum of the Alhambra, Palace of Carlos V.

Space September 2012. The Tower of the Princesses

Espacio_septiembre2011 The Tower of the Princesses (Torre de las infantas) is a clear example of the contrast between the plain decoration found outside and the rich architecture and decoration of the inside. From the simple exterior volume of this tower with a plain wall with two window spaces, however the inside of the tower shows a complex volume to the distribution of the spaces and the rich decoration of the tiles, plasterwork and vaults. In a small interior space is concentrated ab incredible decoration of architectural complexity. It is an example of the skills of the nasrid architecture to get the most of use of the interior space.

Piece of September 2012. Caliphal ataifor of Medina al Zahra

ataifor_miniPatronato de la Alhambra y Generalife announces the Piece of the Month, the Caliphal bowl which has the inscription Al Mulk from Madinat al Zahra’. Those who are interested in participating in this free programme that will take place from 12 a.m. every Saturday in September, may go to Hall II of the Museum of the Alhambra. There Gaspar Aranda, the Art Historian, will explain the details of this unique piece.

The bowl has a very special shape, with decorative technique in ‘green and manganese’ and an outstanding epigraph in Arabic in the centre, which indicates that this ceramic ware was made in the caliphal city, Madinat al-Zahra’ (Cordoba) and was used in the most renowned tableware of the palace during the height of its splendour during the second half of the 10th century.

Its shape is identified with one of the types of vessels included in the specific denomination of ataifor (from the Arabic tayfur) in the context of Al-Andalus. Both the outside and the inside of the piece are fully glazed, but using two methods of the technique and applied at two different times. While the outer surface was covered with a honey-coloured monochrome vitreous glaze (containing oxide of lead and iron) the concave surface has white, green and black decoration.

Piece of August 2012. Nasrid glass tableware

Copa_nazari_200Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife chooses Nasrid glass tableware as museum piece of the month. Those interested on this free activity may go to the Hall VII of the Museum of the Alhambra any Saturday of August from 12 a.m. There the Bachelor of Fine Arts, Isabel Cambil, will reveal the peculiarities of these unique pieces.

The best-known, best-preserved and best-documented recipients of the Nasrid glass production are pieces in form of glasses (with or without stems) used as household items.

In the poetry of this period many references to these pieces may be found. Many of these poems highlight their transparency, through which the content of the glass can clearly be seen.

Another peculiarity of the Nasrid glass production is that the decoration of the glass is exclusively created by moulds. The decoration is simple but very effective, characterised by plant stylizations and geometric patterns.

The glasses profile as well as their decoration show an obvious relation to pieces of previous periods, such as the glasses of Madinat al-Zahra’.

When: Saturdays (August), noon
Where: Room VII, Museum of the Alhambra, Palace of Carlos V.
