Enero Piece's. Dar al-Arusa tiled panel

Pieza_enero2012January’s Museum Piece of the Month is the Dar al-Arusa tiled panel. Every Saturday in December, from noon onwards, art historian Gloria Aljazairi will analyse the peculiarities of this interesting piece, including its pattern, module and proportions, in Room IV of the Museum of the Alhambra, as part of this free programme offered by Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife (PAG).

The geometrically-decorated tiled panel is one of the remains of the enigmatic Dar al-Árusa palace, located on Cerro del Sol, and testifies to the importance, delicacy and sumptuousness of the almunias, holiday palaces built outside the city walls.

After 4 Year Absence, Alhambra's Refurbished Lions Begin to Return to their Fountain

leonsolo

The first of twelve fully restored marble lions (pictured above) that stand watch in Spain's Alhambra in Granada returned to its spot Monday after being restored by experts.

A miniature crane lowered the 300-kilogramme (660-pound) stone lion "number 8" into place at the foot of a fountain in the Court of the Lions at the heart of the building, one of Spain's biggest tourist attractions.

"It is an historic event," said Paulino Plata, a cultural official for the Andalucia region, as the lion returned to the spot where it had sat for centuries before it was moved for restoration work that began in 2002. The lions were removed from the courtyard for refurbishing four years ago.

Rich in Islamic art and architecture, the Alhambra was a fortress for the Nasrid dynasty which lived there from the 13th century.

Piece of 2011 December: Perfume in Nasrid Granada

Pieza_diciembre_2011 December’s Museum Piece of the Month is a glass perfume bottle and the role of perfume in Nasrid Granada. Every Saturday in November, from noon onwards, art historian Montserrat Morillas will analyse the subject in Room VII of the Museum of the Alhambra, as part of a free programme offered by Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife (PAG).

Pieces like this glass perfume bottle reveal the great importance of ointments, oils and perfumes in Muslim society in Spain. Both for everyday and for special occasions, a huge range of scents and aromas perfumed all public, private and religious spaces. Perfumes were used by both men and women and among all social classes.

Perfumes were made mainly from lemon, rose, violet, amber and musk, among other ingredients, and varied depending on the time of year, mood or the occasion for which they were worn. The importance of scents was such that they were discussed in treatises on nutrition, hygiene and medicine.

Space of December 2011: The hall of the beds

Espacio_diciembre_2011From the gallery that divides the Court of the Grated Window (Patio de la Reja) and the Court of Lindaraja (Patio de Lindaraja) there is access to the ground floor of Comares Baths (Baño de Comares). The original entrance, however, was located higher, at the level of the Court of the Myrtles (Patio de los Arrayanes) connecting it to the Hall of the Beds.

The function of this space in Comares Baths is similar to that of the apoditerium in the Roman baths. It was a place for relaxation and body care before taking the bath, illuminated with a top lantern around which the cloakrooms distributed on the upper floor. The lively colours of the hall are not the original ones but belong to a restoration work performed in the second half of the 19th century.
