Piece of August 2012. Nasrid glass tableware
Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife chooses Nasrid glass tableware as museum piece of the month. Those interested on this free activity may go to the Hall VII of the Museum of the Alhambra any Saturday of August from 12 a.m. There the Bachelor of Fine Arts, Isabel Cambil, will reveal the peculiarities of these unique pieces.
The best-known, best-preserved and best-documented recipients of the Nasrid glass production are pieces in form of glasses (with or without stems) used as household items.
In the poetry of this period many references to these pieces may be found. Many of these poems highlight their transparency, through which the content of the glass can clearly be seen.
Another peculiarity of the Nasrid glass production is that the decoration of the glass is exclusively created by moulds. The decoration is simple but very effective, characterised by plant stylizations and geometric patterns.
The glasses profile as well as their decoration show an obvious relation to pieces of previous periods, such as the glasses of Madinat al-Zahra’.
